The holidays are here! Now it’s time to start considering shipping out presents. Why not save money and prepare the packaging supplies yourself?
Simple materials for packing include: Heavy tape, some kind of stuffing, and of course something to pack your item in. Doing it yourself is easy. It will also save you time and money.
The important thing is to make sure that you get supplies that will be appropriate for what you are packing. If you are unsure, ask any salesman at your local office supply store. They should know how to advise you.
Packing tape comes in a variety of widths and strength. Getting the right width is important for the security of your box. Look for a good width with strong adhesive.
Boxes for packing are another important decision. You want to get a box that suits your needs. Make it so that you have room for your item to have a snug fit. The packing filler should be able to go in nicely to protect your item during shipment.
Of course you’ll want to decide on a filler for your item. Some more expensive fillers are available in stores. You can also opt to use shredded newspapers or old clothes you no longer use. This will offer more support for your item.
The industrial filler is varied. Some companies use peanuts. Some use shredded paper. The most common is Styrofoam balls. With so many options, you have a lot to think about.
Once you have the supplies, it’s time to pack the item to be shipped. Most people start by wrapping the item in soft cloth or other wrapping material. This gives it a little bit of extra protection.
Pour a few inches of filler material in the box. Set the item inside it. Move the filler around it a bit. Add more filler to the box to make sure that the product is well cushioned.
Shut the box as usual. Using the packing tape, secure it. Some people like to use many layers of tape to make sure the box it closed thoroughly. This is not necessary if you have strong adhesive tape.
You’re almost done! Now it’s time to check into shipping. Shipping has evolved from the usual trip to the post office. Now you can ship it in any number of ways. You can even leave it on the porch with the postage label and the postman will take it for you.
Does the idea of leaving a package unattended bother you? Don’t worry. There are other methods. One popular method is to use a shipping store. Shop around for the best rates on gift shipment.
Shipping rates at most places vary. They depend greatly on the package size and weight. Most companies now offer a flat rate box. If your item fits in it, the shipment cost is the same no matter how heavy the box is.
There is also the ever popular post office. Like other shipping places, the post office’s rates will depend on weight and size. They will also have your flat rate shipping box.
Now that you know a little bit about packaging supplies and shipments, you are armed for the holidays. Take the time out to explore your options fully. Look for holiday rates and specials.
